Kristine DeBell next to Gloria Jean

Alice in Wonderland

Alice in Wonderland

Before I left Hollywood Show 2014, I wanted one last time to look at the Gloria Jean table before leaving my connection to 1940s Hollywood. Next to her table on my left, I happened to spot photos from the film Alice in Wonderland: An X-rated Musical Fantasy (1976) beside photos from Meatballs (1979). I knew this had to be Kristine DeBell’s table. Those are the two films I associate with her.

I think no one was at the table when I first stared at the photos but was caught by surprise when Kristine greeted me. I was startled but pleased the actress from one of the first adult movies I’d ever seen was present at the Hollywood Show where my mission was to see Gloria Jean, Margaret O’Brien and Sheila E.

I told her I had seen Alice, enjoyed it and told my friends about it. She said it was a cute movie. Then I froze because I didn’t know what else to say. It’s the only movie I’ve ever seen of hers. I didn’t come to the show to see her. What made it worse is that she was so nice. Yet I wasn’t a true “fan.” I left feeling bad not asking about her career, asking for a photo or autograph.

Later I looked her up online. She has been in movies that also starred Lew Ayres, Joan Bennett, Dorothy Malone and Jose Ferrer to name a few. I kicked myself for not knowing this earlier as I was sure she’d have stories to tell. Well I did get a hold of her but I forget I’m an old lady trapped in a young body. Kristine was born in the mid-1950s. I was excited that she worked with Buddy Ebsen in Barnaby Jones but she lamented she couldn’t meet her favorite Cat Woman, Lee Meriweather, who also starred on Barnaby Jones. I’m a child of the 1930s and she’s a child of the 1960s.

I feel I should be a bit more sensitive when I meet younger celebrities who have worked with wonderful actors from various decades.. She was sensitive with my interests though and told me she got to meet Jose Ferrer in Battle Creek Brawl but did not meet Lloyd Bridges on the set of Life of the Party: The Story of Beatrice because they did not have scenes together.

If I do meet her again, at least I won’t freeze and leave too quickly.
