Shirley Yamaguchi (1920-2014)
I’m not too familiar with Yoshiko “Shirley” Yamaguchi but I immediately recognized her name because I still remember parts of the King Vidor directed movie Japanese War Bride, a movie I saw on TV when I was about ten years old.
I remember an American soldier with his Japanese wife. They have a child. At the hospital the baby is surrounded by other babies. The grandmother says the baby looks like the father or has a feature like the father, maybe the nose. A female character whom I believe is the American’s sister, states “but he doesn’t have his father’s eyes.” Otherwise I’m unfamiliar with most of Yamaguchi’s work although she had a rich history in film and TV career; certainly an excellent candidate for a biopic considering her transition from Chinese movies to American and Japanese films.
