14 Juillet: My favorite French movies
My francophile friend says I know too many obscure films including French ones. Not true at all. I just know the famous ones. I haven’t seen many….maybe around 50. My knowledge in French films is rudimentary. Anyway I’d like to share some of my favorite older French films.
1) Madame De (1953)
2) Les Diaboliques (1955)
3) Les Biches (1968)
4) Quai des Orfèvres (1947)
5) Pépé le Moko (1937)
6) Viva Maria! (1965) trailer below
7) Cléo de 5 à 7 (1962)
8) Le Mépris (1963)
9) Mon oncle (1958)
10) L’Atalante (1934)
I’ve only seen #2 and #9. Tant pis.

I remember when I posted my favorite 30s films, there was only one film you hadn’t seen, and it happened to be the only French one I listed. It was Under the Roofs of Paris (1930). If you ever see it, tell me what you think.
Cléo de 5 à 7 sounds interesting. Films that take place in real time are fascinating; I’ve only seen three of them though:
Rope (1948)
High Noon (1952)
United 93 (2006)

Okay I put Under the Roofs of Paris in my Netflix queue. Cléo is also directed by a (Belgian) woman! Hope that doesn’t dissuade now. LOL
